| "About the year 1860 or 1861, Mrs.
Mary Constable died, and her son-in-law, Wilson Martin, obtained
permission of Charles Carter to inter the remains in a portion of
his land, south of Eaton, with the privilege of founding at that
place a public cemetery. Subsequently, negotiations were
concluded with James Long for a tract adjoining, and, at a late
date, two acres more were added. A substantial fence was
constructed around the grounds, a large part of the work being
performed by Mr. Martin, and the County Surveyor was employed to lay
of a number of lots, from the sale of which the money was derived to
pay for the grounds." Source: Helm, T B, History of Delaware County, Indiana, with Illustrations and Biographical Sketches (Chicago: Kingman Brothers, 1881), Bk1595, page 291. |
