Introduction: This album was created by Mabel Worthen Haas, ID0378 (1899-1978) and August Haas, ID0377 (1894-1943) c. 1918 - 1922. The album concentrates mostly on the time August spent at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in 1918. It also contains photos of children, mostly Wilma Neoma Haas, ID0379 (1918-2010) and Norma Louise Haas, ID0006 (1919-2004). Olive Jean Haas, ID0380 (1921-2003) is also included in the album a few times. The original album contained black pages with photos mounted using paste. In 1980 I was given the opportunity to copy the pictures in the album. I photographed each page using a 4 x 5 camera. The resulting negatives (Negs 163-164) were processed and then masked by me to leave the pictures that appeared on each page. This blocking made the resulting prints with backgrounds that were white instead of black. Otherwise the placement of the pictures on the pages is as the original. In 2006 I received the album. By that time it was in bad shape with torn pages and several of the original pictures missing. (Ph13387-080-082.tif). The photos were badly faded and it was obvious the acidic paper of the album was affecting the photos. I removed the photos from the pages and removed as much of the album paper from the photos as possible. I placed the photos in individual envelopes. Several of the photos were missing. The daughters of August and Mabel had gone through other albums and boxes of pictures and parceled out the contents to each other. I have to assume this is what happened to these missing photos. Also two of the pictures of August, one holding a clarinet in his dark uniform (Ph13387-059.tif) and one at ease in his dark uniform (Ph13387-065.tif) are missing the heads. |
