public, within and for the county and State aforesaid, Joshua F. Piles
who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is 81 years of age, and a resident of Pyrmont
county of Montgomery, State of Ohio; and that he is the identical person
who was ENROLLED at Dayton Ohio, under the name of Joshua F. Piles
on the 5th day of January, 1865, as a Private
in Co C 8th Regiment O. V. Cavalry

In the matter of Joshua F Piles
G 44th O.V.I IC386046
ON THIS 25 day of August A.D. 1923, personally appeared before me
a Notary Public, in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer
oaths Joshua F Piles Aged 81 years, a resident of Brookville (Pyrmont)
in the County of Montgomery, and State of Ohio
whose Post-office address is Brookville Ohio R R 1
well known to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn, declared in relation
to aforesaid case as follows:
I have been ? suffering from Sciatic rheumatism, Kidney and bladder troubles for years but for the past eighteen months or more have been in such condition that I have required the regular care and attendance of a second person in dressing and otherwise attending to my physical needs.

Declaration for an Original Invalid Pension
This must be Executed before a Court of Record or some Office Thereof Having Custody of the Seal

State of Ohio, County of Montgomery, SS:
on this 3d day of April A.D. One thousand eight hundred and eighty six
personally appeared before me Deputy Clerk of the Common Plead a court
of Record within and for the county and state aforesaid Joshua F. Piles
aged 42 years, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical
Joshua F Piles who was ENROLLED on the [3 or 5]th day of
Sept 1861, in company “G” of the 44th regiment of Ohio Vol.
commanded by W. W. Woodward and was honorably DISCHARGED at
Clarksburg W. Va on the 30" day of July, 1865; That his
personal description is as follows: Age 42 years; height 5 feet 8 inches; complexion Fair
hair, black; eyes Black. That while a member of the organization aforesaid, in the
service and in the line of his duty at Charleston in the State of Virginia
on or about the 17" day of November, 1861, he contracted a
severe cold which settled on his lungs and he
has been affected with disease of lungs ever since.
Also about the same time and place he contract-
ed a disease of the Bowels which terminated in
Chronic Diarrhea, from which he has never
recovered causing him to be disabled from 
performing but little labor.

Dr H K Steele 17th November 1861 was in hospital 11 weeks
was sent home 3 months.

That he has not been employed in the military or naval service otherwise than as stated above reenlisted
in 8th Co V. I. Co “G” Jany 1864 and discharged – Clarksburg W Va

That he has not been employed in the military, or Naval service of the United States since the 30 day of July 1865

That since leaving the service this applicant has resided in the town of Pyrmont
in the State of Ohio, and that his occupation has been that of a Painter
That prior to his entry into the service above named he was a man of good sound, physical health, being when enrolled a
Farmer. That he is now partially disabled
from obtaining his subsistence by manual labor by reason of his injuries, above described, received in the service of
the United States; and he therefore makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the invalid pension
roll of he United States. He thereby appoints with full power of substitution and revocation,
SOULE & CO., Of Washington, D.C.,
his true and lawful attorneys to prosecute his claim. That he has never received nor applied for
a pension; that his residence is no. ___ Street _______

State of Ohio, County of Montgomery, SS:
On this 6th day of June, 1928, before me, the undersigned, personally
appeared Isabel Piles, who makes the following declaration as an application for
pension under the provisions of the act of Congress approved May 1, 1920.
That she is 77 years of age, that she was born in the year 1851
at Pyrmont, Ohio
That she is the widow of Joshua Piles, who
ENLISTED Sept 4, 1861, at Dayton, Ohio, under the name of
Joshua Piles, in Company “C or G” 44 Ohio Cavalry
and was honorably
DISCHARGED July 30, 1865, having served ninety days or more, or was discharged for, or died in service
of the United States of a disability incurred in the service in the line of duty, during the CIVIL WAR, and who
DIED May 30, 1928, at Pyrmont, Montg Co Ohio
That he also served in 8th Ohio Cavalry
and that, except as herein stated, said soldier (or sailor) was not employed in the military or naval service of the United States;
THAT SHE WAS MARRIED to said soldier (or sailor) Jan 10th, 1866, under the name
of Isabel Mudhank, at Dayton Ohio
by David Winters; that she had not been previously married, that he had not
been previously married;

[There are no children listed who are under 16 years of age and living at the time]

That she did not serve in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard of the United States between April 6, 1917, and
July 2, 1921, or at any time during said period.
That no member of her family served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard of he United States between
April 6, 1917, and July 2, 1921, or at any time during said period
That she has not heretofore applied for pension, the number of her former claim being:; that said
soldier (or sailor) was a pensioner, the number of his pension certificate being 386046.

been Joshua F. Pile's physician every
since I have been a graduate of medicine;
I have known him all my life, as to
his ability to perform manual labor I can
swear as I have many times - He is
not able to do any Manual Labor &
Never will be.
Hoping this fills the
requirements asked for.

[01] General Affidavit from Isabelle Piles, 23 Aug 1923 -
State of Ohio County of Montgomery
In the matter of Joshua F. Piles 44th O.V.I IC 386,046
On this 25th day of August A.D. 1923, personally appeared before me
a Notary Public, in and for the aforesaid county, duly authorized to administer
oaths Isabell Piles aged 72 years, a resident of Brookville (Pyrmont)
in the County of Montgomery, and State of Ohio
whose Post-office address is Brookville Ohio R R 1
well known to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation
to the aforesaid case as follows:
I am the attendant of Joshua F. Piles.
For the past eighteen months I have washed
and dressed this claimant, Joshua F. Piles he
being unable to care for himself properly.  He
is a great sufferer from rheumatism, kidney
and bladder troubles, being able only at rar
intervals to do anything for himself.  On account
of these ailments I take care of him regularly.

She further declares that she has no interest in said case and is not concerned in its prosecution

Notary Public in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths,
Susan King aged 85 years, a resident of Pyrmont
in the County of Montgomery and State of Ohio
P.O. R F D # 1 Brookville, Ohio

I Susan King aged 85 years, have known
Joshua Piles all my life.  That he, Joshua Piles
and Isabell Mundhenk were married more
than sixty years ago, and have lived
all those years in wedded bliss
That neither one was ever married before.

in the County of Montgomery and State of Ohio
P.O. RFD #1, Brookville, Ohio . . .

That he has personally know Joshua Piles for 65 years, and that
Joshua Piles and Isabell Mundhenk were married more than 60 years
ago, and that neither of them were ever married before.
